Family Outings on a Budget in HCMC: 6 Simple Plans
Published 02 Nov 2026, 11:00 · KiddoGo Editorial · Last updated
Six easy family outings across HCMC, from free park days and book browsing to a river ride, museum visit and zoo trip, with example costs for four.
A full family outing without a big ticket bill
An enjoyable day out in Ho Chi Minh City does not have to mean a pricey play center or a long trip. These six plans mix free outdoor time, books, a short river ride and two ticketed choices. Pick one that is close to home, then keep food and extras optional.
How we calculated costs: The examples below use two adults and two children. They cover admission or transport tickets only, not travel to the venue, parking, snacks, optional games or meals. Prices and access should be confirmed before setting off.
Six easy outings, from free to 240,000 VND
1. Take the kids to a shady park — free
For a simple morning outdoors, try Tao Dan Park playground in District 1. There are mature trees, paths, open spaces and a children's playground. An alternative if you live closer to District 10 is Le Thi Rieng Park / Tho Trang, where you can enjoy the public park without purchasing tickets to nearby paid attractions.
Make the outing more interesting with a tiny nature challenge: spot three leaf shapes, listen for birds and choose a favorite tree. Bring water and check playground condition or temporary event restrictions.
Sample family cost: 0 VND for park admission.
2. Browse books together in District 1 — free
Nguyen Van Binh Book Street is a short pedestrian street beside the Central Post Office, with bookshops, publishers and places to browse. Let each child pick a picture-book cover they like, then invent a story from it. Browsing does not require buying a book.
A short walk around the surrounding city-center landmarks can extend the outing, but use care when crossing busy streets.
Sample family cost: 0 VND to browse. Books and drinks are optional extras.
3. Explore a huge park in Thu Duc — free
The Vinhomes Grand Park 36ha Playgrounds offer a longer outdoor visit, with paths, green space and play areas. Vinhomes says the public may enter the 36-hectare park free of charge; the published park hours are 5:00 AM to 9:30 PM.
Keep this a park-and-play day rather than adding the separate ticketed VinWonders attractions or other paid facilities. The travel cost may make it less budget-friendly if you live far away.
Sample family cost: 0 VND for general park entry.
4. See the city from the river — 120,000 VND for four return tickets
Start at Bạch Đằng Pier in District 1 and take the Saigon WaterBus for a short river journey. The operator lists 15,000 VND per person one way, or 30,000 VND return. For four paying passengers, a return trip is 120,000 VND.
Make the river ride the main event instead of paying for another attraction. Arrive early, check the current departure and return times, and buy the appropriate ticket before boarding. You can also enjoy the public Bạch Đằng riverside promenade before or after the ride.
Sample family cost: 120,000 VND for four return tickets.
5. Have a curious afternoon at the History Museum — about 120,000 VND
The History Museum of Ho Chi Minh City is a good option for children who enjoy unusual objects, old buildings and stories about the past. Choose just one or two galleries, and ask everyone to find the most surprising object.
Important 2026 price update: The museum announced a new standard admission fee of 60,000 VND per visitor from October 1, 2026, with free entry for children and students under its exemption policy. Two standard adult tickets would cost 120,000 VND; check the children's eligibility and bring any relevant documentation. The museum opens Tuesday through Sunday, 8:00–11:30 AM and 1:00–5:00 PM. It is closed on Mondays. Older KiddoGo ticket figures may not reflect this new fee, so use the museum's latest notice when budgeting.
Sample family cost: 120,000 VND for two paying adults and two eligible children.
6. Make an animal-and-garden morning — 120,000 to 240,000 VND
At Saigon Zoo and Botanical Gardens, families can spend time with animal exhibits and large botanical gardens in central District 1.
Official admission is based on height: 60,000 VND for visitors 1.3 m and taller, 40,000 VND for children from 1 m to under 1.3 m, and free for children under 1 m accompanied by an adult. For two adults (120,000 VND), the family total depends on the children's heights: 120,000 VND if both children are under 1 m, 200,000 VND if both are from 1 m to under 1.3 m, and 240,000 VND if both are 1.3 m or taller. Optional rides and food are extra.
Sample family cost: 120,000–240,000 VND, depending on the children's heights.
What about a free evening in District 7?
Crescent Lake Park (Hồ Bán Nguyệt) and Starlight Bridge are known for an easy public lakeside walk. However, Phú Mỹ Hưng announced a landscape improvement project around the lake running from March 2026 to approximately April 2027. Check which paths and viewing areas are accessible before traveling, and do not rely on particular evening light or water effects being available.
Five ways to keep the total down
- Choose a place near home. A free outing is not always cheaper after a long taxi journey.
- Bring water, hats and a small snack where venue rules permit.
- Set a limit for rides, snacks and souvenirs before leaving.
- For boats and museums, check today's hours, ticket rules and child eligibility.
- One good activity is enough. An unhurried hour together can be a successful day out.
