After a school day, a little play together can be enough. These three Halloween games need only a few everyday items. Choose one, keep the spooky details friendly, and stop whenever your child has had enough.

Choose by your child’s energy: monster freeze dance for a movement break, shadow guessing for a quieter moment, or sock tossing for a shared challenge. Set aside about 10–15 minutes, including setup, and let one game be enough.

1. Monster freeze dance

You need: Music and a clear space to move.

Choose a song your child likes. While the music plays, move like a friendly Halloween character: take big monster steps, float like a ghost, or stretch like a sleepy cat.

Pause the music and freeze. Start again with a new movement, then let your child choose the character or control the music.

For a quieter version, play seated and move just your arms, hands, and face. Nobody needs to be “out” if they wobble.

Keep bags, toys, and furniture out of the movement area. Walking and small movements work well; there is no need to run or jump.

2. Guess the Halloween shadow

You need: A flashlight, a plain wall, and your hands or a few large household objects.

Keep enough room light on to move comfortably. Shine the flashlight toward a wall and place your hand or an object between the light and the wall.

Can your child guess the shape? Try a hand-shaped spider, a cup that looks like a tiny cauldron, or a familiar toy. Then swap roles.

Younger children can choose between two objects placed in front of them. Older children can invent a funny character and give you one clue.

Keep the flashlight away from eyes. Use an ordinary flashlight, not a laser, and keep the game bright and friendly if your child dislikes darkness.

3. Feed the pumpkin

You need: A basket or cardboard box, a few pairs of rolled-up socks, and an optional paper pumpkin face.

Put the basket on the floor. If you like, add a pumpkin face to the outside, leaving the opening clear.

Choose a nearby starting spot and gently toss the sock balls into the “pumpkin.” Take turns and move the starting spot closer or farther away to suit your child.

Younger children can drop the socks into the basket. Older children can count a shared total or suggest a new throwing position. A cooperative challenge works without declaring a winner.

Use soft rolled-up socks rather than small balls or food. Aim only toward the basket and keep the area clear.

Make it fit your afternoon

Have a drink and a break first if your child needs one. Offer a choice of two games, rather than setting up everything. Play one short round, then decide together whether to continue.

Skip the Halloween theme whenever you like. Monster dancing can become animal dancing, shadow guessing works all year, and a plain laundry basket is just as useful as a pumpkin.
